Simple Ambition

facebw2

As a young man, early in my youth
I thought the world my realm
There would be nothing I couldn’t do
As captain steering this life’s rudder-helm.

But as the years past and, getting older;
The harsh realities of life taken root;
My ambitions it seemed, became less bolder,
As my true assessment of life; more astute.

Not to say things went totally array,
There have been successes along the way;
But, innocent naivety of youth does belie:
As more then simple ambition in life, is needed to play.

new book release: reflection – response

I am pleased to announce the release of my latest book of poetry titled:

REFLECTION – RESPONSE  through the voice of poetry.

As an introduction, this collection of poems is premised on reflection of the many important and diverse issues facing the global human community today and, through the voice of poetry, express my personal response to a perceived affect these issues are having on human, societal evolution.  Interspersed amongst these poems are several reflecting a personal philosophy toward life, sexuality and the environment.

I hope you will take a few moments to visit my Self-publishing website by clicking on the image below to review the contents of this book and,  I would be further honored if you found it worthy of purchasing at a reasonable cost.  It is available as Soft-cover and Hard-cover issues.

Thank you in advance for your time in this regard.

Enjoy:

Stephen F. Cohen is professor emeritus of Russian studies

In response to an article titled Distorting Russia: How the US Media Misrepresents Sochi, Putin, and Ukraine written by Stephen F. Cohen is professor emeritus of Russian studies at New York University and professor emeritus of politics at Princeton University. His books include Soviet Fates and Lost Alternatives: From Stalinism to the New Cold War.

This piece originally appeared in The Nation. ,

I submitted the following comment:

Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine…. a growing list of countries thrown into chaos premised on civil unrest purportedly spawned from decades of repressive, dictatorial regimes.

We, the citizens of so-called western democracies, whose treasure and prodigy are willfully and obligingly expended in these conflagrations; we should demand emphasis be directed toward clarifying the motivation(s) of our political elites in their life-expending, strategic decision-making, game of global chess that is blindly supported through partisan biased, sound-bite echoing, ill-informed commercial main-stream media reporting and, the sycophant behavior of equally ill-informed and financially motivated pundits.

As an avid follower of these unsettling, world events it is increasingly difficult to believe in the functionality of civil, global society; a collective that appears willing to let itself to be driven toward an apocalyptic abyss by the pathological, psychopathic maneuverings of but a few of our species. If there is ever a time in our human history that represents the worse of humanity it is Now, this time, this place. On every front, every issue, chaos presents an opportunity for the collapse of civil, human existence to which our elected representatives respond; not with solution but, with derision, division and duplicitous rhetoric.

MIRACLE TO CHANGE

As the world spins on its axis tilt

Twenty-four hours of blood to be spilled

Humanity’s participants long for the day

Brutality and evil will have gone away

If history speaks as loudly as it does

Bullets and famine will win over love

Turbulence and chaos reflected in the skies

Surprisingly, some naively still ask: why?

Though beauty of flora and fauna still exist

As casket wreaths, its spoils their bliss

Mankind toward destruction seems inclined

What miracle to change will it have to find?

RELENTLESS WAR of BELIEFS

For all the suffering and malcontent

Giving rise to hell on Earth – destruction bent

For the energies that are being ill-spent

Humanity’s dissolution is the final end event

Gory are the pictures of dead and the maimed

In whose honor is this blasphemy named

And in the end, what is to be gained?

For some pious belief or altruistic fame.

I am tired of the need to descent

To throw stones that don’t even dent

Bullet chamber in reply being spent

When will this needless human suffering relent?

The factions on each side

To ancient belief they blindly abide

But the reality will not hide

When today’s loved ones are the ones to die!

The Blame

wedge

Myopic is the global, political mindset,
It yields the greatest electoral return,
Foregoing the interest of the unborn children,
Yields fossil fuels legislated to pollute, opposition to spurn.

Jobs, jobs, and more jobs
The rationale to explain and excuse
The destruction of earthly resources
Health and welfare of the many to be abused

Fracking, pipelines nomenclature of the day,
Hyped as essential for the economy to survive.
Forests and fresh water resources given to the cause;
Deemed unessential for humanity to flourish and thrive.

The powers that be hold all the relevant cards,
The balance of power rests in their hand.
To reverse the current destructive, global path;
The powerless together, must unite and band.

Populace, street demonstrations are impudent to needed change;
A more powerful, permanent message may be needed, enforced.
A global, collective opposition to those self-serving and rule;
A tangible, visible sign of change that all humanity can endorse.

Violence, loss of property and life is not the wanted course,
Yet they whom hold the power for conditions to be sustained
Continue to ignore the plight and demands of the many;
Whatever the outcome, responsibility, to them, the blame, remains.

Born Killers

brrain

Are we all sons and daughters of KILLERS!

Yes, a rather harsh statement though, arguably, there is some truth to this observation.

Dating back to days of primordial-man, the male of the species, given strength of stature relative to that presumed of his female counterpart, assumed the roll of hunter-gatherer and protector of the clan unit from predators. This killer instinct fueled by high levels of testosterone, though tempered over time, remains within our genetic heredity. Frankly, we are the direct descendents of those whom the `killer instinct’ has and arguably still is, an essential component to survival.

In consideration to this hypothesis, one need recognize the psychological implication(s) associated with, over the millennia, by male characterization as `machismo’, principally derived from the demands imposed on him.  A role ultimately proven as successful, amongst other obvious factors, given a global population of over six-billion humans today.

History supports the notion that Man as in `Male’, is imbued with a propensity to be aggressive and harsh or, the staunch defender, protector, when faced with conflict. As implied above; it is inherent in his evolutionary DNA. However, in light of 21st century advances is this established, historical  role of `Male’ still relevant? Is it time for a new era of `feminism’  to assume a more commanding role in shaping human consciousness on a global scale?

Female participation in regions of organization and position of power to decide, presently dominated and heralded as the Male’s role, is on the increase.  Globally, women are taking and occupying relevant, leadership roles in all facets of human life as politicians and chiefs of commerce and industry.

In the period leading up to the much hyped world altering events of Dec. 21st 2012, many  mystics and astrologist promoted the notion that post 2012, a gradual transition of non-physical consciousness from left-brain (male) to right-brain (female) will commence and promulgate into the century.  Unfortunately, statistically, this has not materialized especially in the northern hemisphere as depicted by the following: Source: Grant Thornton International Business Report 2012

women chrt 1
(Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/women-worldwide-still-struggle-to-break-into-leadership-roles-2012-3?op=1
Possibly the first clue failure to the notion that Females will assume a greater leadership role in world affairs manifest with the failure of Hilary Clinton to win the leadership nomination during 2012 United States Democratic Party Presidential Primary. Nor was she considered (or possibly refused) the position of Vice-President but then became the United States Secretary of State and subsequently retired to John Kerry in early 2013. It is rumored that Clinton will run for nomination in the 2016 Primary.

In the ensuing period other nations have observed a significant percentage of women in leadership positions. Possibly most surprising of these is Russia leading all major nations at 46 percent versus Canada and the United States combined, at 18 percent. The global average is 21 percent.

women chrt 2 Source: Grant Thornton International Business Report 2012

Going beyond the prophetic notions of mystics and astrological cosmic prediction, in the end, the ultimate question truly is: whether the leadership of nations, corporations and human organizations by either women or men and, the notion of right versus left brain consciousness attributed to both respectively, has significance in the performance and product of such leadership?

Several peer reviewed studies have been conducted to address this question and their findings suggest the differences on the whole as in-conclusive. Principally the assignment of predominately right-brain function to women versus left-brain to men, is unsupported. Factors such as contextual environment play a significant role in responses given by either gender.

For example `A self-assessment Internet survey was conducted by Brack and Zhang on Neuro-politics.com ‘  assessing Mean Left versus Right brain responses of Liberal, Moderate and Conservative Males versus Females produced  the following results:

[Abbreviations: Female Liberal (FL), Female Moderate (FM), Female Conservative (FC), Male Liberal (ML), Male Moderate (MM), and Male Conservative (MC).]

women chrt 4

To fully explore the question goes beyond the scope of this essay and a general search of the Internet will produce significant results to ameliorate the subject.  To gain a full explanation of the variances presented by the above charts follow this link:

To conclude, it is suggested that whether males or females dominate position of power at any level of human civilized organization, ultimately it is the humanity within them to overcome the inherent, human propensity to extort any element of human emotion and psychology upon their fellow humans. Only time and record of history remains to know the truth to the suggestions we are born KILLERS.

Life-Path

lifepath

As I walked this cold winter’s day I encounter a humble looking man wheeling with difficulty on the snow and ice laden side-walk, a tattered store shopping cart filled with age-weathered odds and ends. To avoid the narrowing passage-way I raised my hand to indicate my alternate path to which he took as a sign of acknowledgement and, reacted with a quite hello. Sizing up the stranger, wearing a dirt-stained hooded winter coat, he looked to be a man of the street, possibly homeless. We both stopped momentarily if not only long enough for me to gaze into his eyes and observe the hardship pained on his unshaven and age-creased face and, to my astonishment, presuming the harshness of this man’s life-journey, he smiled exposing his failing, decaying teeth, reflective of his beaten state and likelihood of much pain. In those few brief moments of encounter two main thoughts came to mind: firstly, how one who shows all outward signs of a dark, humble and difficult life could/would react to such a brief encounter with another, with a smile and, second; to question if each human, life-journey presents situations of, or by, our making or, a path to fulfill a preordained destiny.

Information’s Gain

The long faded echo messaging drum-beat
Surpassed by nervous chatter dots to dash
Coursing frequency wave to hard wires’ distant path
Base characters to evolution for information’s’ gain
Unbinding the limits to dictionary of meaning
Letting loose creativeness of unstructured rules
To transcend into eloquence of the pragmatic
Yes versus No binary ethereal communication
Surpassing efficacy of mind-thought brought to word

A SPIDER’S TALE

DSCF0097

Silk-String Weave

The spider’s cobweb weave
Creates an inaudible sound
One heard only by insects
That abound

Like a magnet the attraction
Is unseen
But once caught
It becomes a nightmarish dream

Vibration of a thing’s approach
Instills a fear
A flash of self-reproach

Fruitless struggle
A thought to resign
Life’s fleeting memory
Too short to define

The demon to this source
Follows its tactical course
With success in mind
A carcass to be left behind

To what do we despair?
To the death of one
Or the success
That seems unfair.

Spider To The Fly

`I have you now and most assuredly will you die’
Said the spider to the web caught fly

`Why must I die’ sheepishly cried the fly
`When there others to eat, why not pass me by?’

`You are here and now so am I’ was the spider’s reply
`And I am hungry to eat you, this I will not deny’

`Oh my, oh my’ continued to cry the fly
`What will my family do if I am now to die?’

`Not of my concern’ was the spider’s ominous cry
Its sharp fangs piercing the succulent, helpless fly

`Oh wow is me’ cried the fly `I guess this goodbye’
Trying to escape, giving it just one last try

The spider’s fangs piercing deeper, holding tight the fly
Relished in its good taste, ignoring the fly’s weakening cries

The fly’s hollowed body with its nourishing fluids sucked dry
Lay next to the ravenous spider anxiously waiting ‘til its next victim comes by.
