What A Mess

eagle

Reviewing my library of poems written over the past several years it is astonishing how they unequivocally relate to our current times. The irony, I would presume, lies in the knowledge that the poem was written reflecting upon issues of the time; 2009 to be exact, yet readily still apply to conditions unfolding today. Thus giving credence to the conclusion offered at the end of this poem.

What A Mess

Have I finally succumb?  After years of exploring, investigating, researching, what ever you want to call it, of all things political, religious, sociological, economic, scientific, metaphysical, paranormal, etc, etc, I have come to a conclusion: WE ARE FUCKED!

Since time began humanity has been on the climatic path to a calamitous end it has long anticipated yet has been cultivated to lack the innate intelligence to fully recognize its presence when it inevitably stares them in the proverbial face.

A proliferation of differing perspectives on everything from the origins of our presence on this planet to the question of whether our reality is, in fact, REAL!  And a more pervasive confluence of idea relates to the prospects of our future, continued existence.

A distracting spectrum of opinions as to our future existence has developed incorporating ideas ranging from annihilation due to planetary bodies colliding with Earth in 2012 to global pandemics brought on by drug-resistant strains of bacteria to succumbing to dominance by interstellar beings with mind controlling powers.

Now to complicate the stress all these uncertainties are inflicting upon humanity there is the looming doom, the gloom, and foreboding of a global financial crisis to which a significant part of the industrialized world’s population has no idea of how to survive.  The cultivated dependence on a collapsing infrastructure of social safety nets and social support systems will only lead to further chaos and strife.

The advent of the Internet has spawned a myriad of rationalization of truth to causes and effect and the avocation to their solution for survival against the countless sources to the demise of humanity and modern civilization as have developed to date, only adds to the confusion and chaos that is permeating the world

The conditions are ripe for self proclaimed guru’s, prophets and other like-minded personalities to advocate their solution(s) to these real and perceived problems to rise up to take advantage of the thousands of souls that have been coddled in the delusion of being `cared for’ or the belief – faith in divinity that will conquer all man-made hardship.

Frankly, were there to exist a RESTART BUTTON that would absolve this planet of this corrupt humanity that has evolved upon it – NOW would be the time for that BIG FINGER in the sky to just PUSH IT!

Will It [N]ever Happen?

trump

               Donald J. Trump                            Rodrigo Duterte

Face it, the reality is that the System; the organized, political, judicial and institutional structure of civil society, as it has evolved, comprehensively, is beyond the scope of any Common-person or group of persons, to evoke REAL CHANGE!

Regardless of the Country-nation, be it one governed by democratic philosophy or autocratic, dictatorial oppressive rule; those individual citizens who advocate for a leadership role, on the strength of reforming the rule of law and legislative governance at the behest of the Common citizen, typically renege on the rhetorical promises made during their electoral campaign.

Virtually, on every occasion in the last century; be they President, Prime Minister, Autocratic Dictator or, other titled leader of a Nation, democratically elected or not, to the highest Office of the Nation; upon taking office and at times before, the only true change observed is diametrically opposite in direction to that advocated in the course of their electoral campaigning.

The direct consequence of this failing on the part of those elected to lead In the majority of countries deemed to have fully open, free democratic election processes; the percentage of those who actually vote typically falls below fifty-percent. Meaning, the candidate elected to Office in effect represents significantly less than a minor majority of the nation’s Peoples. The level of political skepticism and mistrust of elected officials effectually nullifies its true significance and fundamentally, is a waste of time and of public revenues.

So what is the remedy solution if, in fact, there is one to be had?

The answer to this question is elusive at this time, however, there are TWO real-time case-studies to be observed over the course of the next coming year of 2017 and beyond:

A) The Presidency of Donald J. Trump – 45 President of the United States

B) The Presidency of Rodrigo Duterte – Newly elected President of the Philippines

The significance of these two presidential administrations stems from both incumbents being elected on the strength of severe and radical CHANGE to the Establishment rule preceding being officially sworn to Office of President. Each having taken a controversial stance on the current state-of-governance and affairs.

In the case of Donald Trump, President-Elect; his brash and at times controversial statements in presenting his electoral platform focused on the middle-class; advocating for their better representation in the form of jobs and equality to share in the prosperity of the nation captioned by his electoral slogan: `Make America Great Again’.

However, the professional character of those whom his `Transition Team’ has announced, to date, to hold senior cabinet positions within the Trump Administration would suggest the antithesis to the far-reaching promises of his campaigning rhetoric.

Donald J. Trump – President Elect

With respect to President Duterte; his election rhetoric too was brash and controversial in nature. His use of deriding language focused on the condition of the middle-class but, more significantly, with respect to the state-of-the nation’s widespread, illegal drug cartels and, rampant corruption of those within public offices of government and private businesses advocating for a ruthless, eradicating approach to remedy the problems.

President Duterte

In conclusion, given the atypical construct of the campaigns awarding these two unconventional individuals the highest office of their respective Nations; the domestic and international implications of their administrative policies during their time of governance as yet to manifest on the world stage, undoubtedly, regardless, they will have a long-term impact on next generation, electoral cycle machinations for their respective nations as well, for those of observing nations.

However, in the interim, the Common-person still remains hostage to the failings of those who choose to come forward on the strength and promise of REAL CHANGE and, the inability of the System to mitigate its failings.

What Monumental Event?

PROMISE BOUND

Awakening to this world increasingly in disarray,
When will this needless suffering go away?
Cluster bombs, extreme weather taking innocent lives,
When will we take serious the global, human, deathly cry?

Who are these leaders that make the charge?
To what end do they allow this to go so far?
To allow suffering on such monumental scale,
Can they not see their deemed leadership, disastrously fail?

Have decades of brutal war on every horrendous scale,
Not taught humanity, this is a defeatist’s path to curtail?
Trillions of dollars expended to advance this inflicted pain,
All to the benefit of those, out of harm’s way, to richly gain.

Political platitudes and ceremonial remembrances become insults
To those willingly giving their lives, to remedy these egregious faults.
Expending the future of humanity, being lost to needless death and strife;
What monumental event will it take to bring back a loving, harmonious life?

The Blame

flag

This poem was written a while back, however, given the recent expansionist mindset of the current Canadian government to give approval to the installation of a liquid natural gas terminal on the pristine coastal waters of British Columbia recently; it demands a revisit to consider the possible detrimental, future outcome of such an environmentally impacting decision.

Myopic is the global, political mindset,
It yields the greatest electoral return,
Foregoing the interest of the unborn children,
Yields fossil fuels legislated to pollute, opposition to spurn.

Jobs, jobs, and more jobs
The rationale to explain and excuse
The destruction of earthly resources;
Health and welfare of the many to be abused.

Fracking, pipelines nomenclature of the day,
Hyped as essential for the economy to survive.
Forests and fresh water are resources to be given up for the cause;
Deemed unessential for humanity to flourish and thrive.

The powers that be hold all the relevant cards,
The balance of power rests in their hand.
To reverse the current destructive, global path;
The powerless together, must unite and band.

Populace, street demonstrations are impudent to needed change;
A more powerful, permanent message may be needed, enforced.
A global, collective opposition to those whom self-serving, rule;
A tangible, visible sign of change that all humanity can endorse.

Violence, loss of property and life is not the wanted course
Yet they who hold the power for conditions to be sustained;
Continue to ignore the plight and demands of the many,
Whatever the outcome, responsibility, to them, the blame, remains.

25000 Refugees

flag

As the new Liberal government under Prime Minister Trudeau proceeds to process 25000 refugees from the scourge of war in the Middle East, more and more Canadians are voicing their concern that the effort will only serve to import radical terrorist to Canadian shores. The opinions voiced by way of comments to News articles addressing the concern has illustrated the true nature of some Canadians in the form of intolerance and cloaked discrimination.  To illustrate my sentiments in reaction to these comments I offer up the following:

23rd Canadian Parliament

A decade and a half into this 21st century futurist of past generations would be greatly disappointed at the extent to which the mire of economic hardship and conflict of war conflates around the globe and, showing little sign of changing course.

A break in the clouds of darkness that envelopes this present era of humanity may, especially for those of us who reside here in Canada, pose a glimmer of hope reflected and encapsulated in the phrase: “Sunny ways my friends. Sunny ways.”

This phrase attributed to Sir Wilfrid Laurier was re-iterated by Justin Trudeau first when addressing campaign supporters following his October 19th, 2015 defeat of Conservatives and Prime Minister Stephen Harper. And, repeated again following his November 4th, 2015 formal swearing in as the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada.

Given that Prime Minister Trudeau’s electoral platform found its success on the promise to bring forth a sea of change to that experienced under the ten year reign of defeated government of Stephen Harper, it seemed a very appropriate and fitting way to communicate to all Canadians and, to the world, in much the same fashion as was Laurier’s intent, that a change of attitude will be forthcoming promising fair, equitable and transparent governance by Canada’s newly elected Cabinet. To make the point evidently clear not only was the swearing-in ceremony at the Governor-General’s residence of Rideau Hall open to general public and broader media, the newly appointed thirty-member Cabinet is comprised equitably of men and women as was promised in Trudeau’s election campaign. Note too after much speculation; each appointee regardless of gender is highly qualified to meet the rigors and obligations of their Ministry portfolio to which they are sworn to uphold.

As Canada and Canadians wait anxiously for the first seating of its new Parliament on December 4th, 2015; the majority of House of Common seats occupied by Trudeau’s Cabinet and Liberal Members of Parliament, the first test to his ability to meet his promise of critical change will be the final legislative outcome of files initiated under the Harper government such as the Security Bill C-51 and the Trans-Pacific Partnership international trade agreement. Both files will be critically watched as they undergo Parliamentary review to render their ratification subject to modification or possibly, be fully repealed especially in the case of Bill C-51. Other significant planks of the Liberal election platform such as legalization of marijuana, opening Canada’s borders to Syrian refugees to name but a few additional critical pieces of new legislation and processes promised will be closely scrutinized for their outcomes.

So what makes the successful election of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, predicated on a platform of `Change’, translated into a swelling of pride and hope for better times significant?

Since the election of President Obama in 2008 and re-election in 2012, many citizens of the United States feel let down, disappointed at the lack of change originally promised during Obama’s 2008 electoral campaign echoed in the campaign slogan: `Yes we Can. O, yes we can’. This failed-state can be attributed primarily to an intransigent, Republican-held, Congress and Senate and, somewhat docile Democratic membership when attempting to fulfil the promises that got a Democratic President elected. Though Obama’s promise to bring health-care to several millions of uninsured Americans has been fulfilled through the passing of the Affordable Care Act a.k.a. Obama Care, it remains under attack by Republicans pursuing nomination as their presidential candidate for the upcoming November 2016 presidential elections. Not to mention the inability to close Guantanamo; end the wars in the Middle East; and, make significant strides in restricting emissions and their effects on climate change.

Fuelled by Democratic President Obama’s apparent failure to fulfil his electoral mandate, beginning in the early months of 2015, continuing to the time of this writing, a field of individual elected and non-seated Republican members, at one point numbering as high as fifteen, have committed to pursuing the Republican presidential nominee to run against the Democratic presidential nominee candidate in the November 2016 election.

In the ensuing months of 2015 several candidates have withdrawn for lack of critical financial or base support. However, those that remain, especially the front runners such as Ben Carson and Donald Trump appear to be gaining their support by they who reflect the worse of the American ethos. The spectre of racial and religious divisiveness centred on historical White-on-Black issues only to be further inflamed by hateful rhetoric directed at Hispanics of Mexican descent and increasingly, due to the conflicts the United States is embroiled in the Middle East, those of Muslim-Islamic faith are confronting a form of Islamophobe broaching persecution and attacks. Compounding this racially, inflammatory state-of-affairs is the significant financial inequity spawned from the 2007-08 global financial collapse from which the United States is only marginally recovered. A recovery that has yielded an even greater class divide with significant growth in profits for the one-percent.

Prior to the successful election of Prime Minister Trudeau, the state-of-affairs under the Harper government had Canada headed in the same direction as that presently occurring in the United States. The tight-lipped, media controlling Harper government seemed to take its legislative playbook from the doctrines of the Tea Party, the extreme right-wing segment that comprises and dominates the policy arm of the Republican Party. His government’s sweeping passage of monster omnibus budget bills crammed with secretive legislation and significant changes to standing legislation, muzzling of scientist and public employees, etc all serving to put a cold chill in the backs of many Canadians.

The final straw came with blatant divisive rhetoric around the treatment of new immigrants especially those of the Muslim faith, a staple factor in the defeat of Harper’s 2015 re-election campaign.

There is little doubt that the same `Messiah-complex’ bestowed Obama following his first election presides over Prime Minister Justin Trudeau however, we can only put our faith and hope that he is capable and able to fulfil his stated goals and promises; to prove to the rest of the World, real change is possible that can lead to “Sunny ways my friends. Sunny ways!”
